The gloves have finally come off.

The Tokomak, the unquestioned masters of the galaxy, have dispatched a massive fleet to crush the Solar Union - and the fledgling Galactic Alliance - before the human race and its alien allies can tear the galactic order asunder. Hundreds of thousands of starships under the command of an alien tactical genius, bent on exterminating the entire human race...the darkest hour is truly at hand.

Admiral Hoshiko Stuart has a plan. The Solar Union will dispatch a fleet of its own, with the objective of smashing the alien fleet before it reaches Sol.

But, as human technology clashes with alien treachery, experience, and sheer numbers, it becomes clear that there can be only one victor...and whoever loses will lose everything.

"I really enjoyed this book. There were threads in the story that made me laugh, such as scifi writers being better at preparing us for space battles. It was fun to read, kept my interest and entertained me. I look forward to the next one."

The LongRange War A Learning Experience Book 5 Audible Audio Edition Christopher G Nuttall Jeffrey Kafer Podium Publishing Books Reviews

  • Three and a half stars. This is a decent book but it doesn't really offer much up towards the series. There is too great a reliance on the 'history' for this to really stand on it's own. It does have a clear beginning, middle and a strong conclusion but they don't really add the larger story arc.

[The biggest problem I had was with the 'tech' involved. What was a "Storm Shadow" and why was it only mentioned once and never used? Hammerheads create a moving black hole, what would happen to a Gravity Point when a Hammerhead hits it. At one point a 'super-nova bomb' is casually mentioned, but what might happen if a Hammerhead (or a dozen) were fired into a star? Supposedly the Solar Union had a tech advantage in the battles, but it was never really seen. ]

The characters never saw anything other that military conflict and there wasn't any real development. This felt more like a contractual obligation fulfilled then a crafted installment to the series.
  • I can’t wait to see with the earth technicians come up with for the next battle with their enemies (starfighters with jump engines and ftl,anti-matter fueled masers / particle beams; even today, the U.S. shoots masers to create perfect vacuum space so to shoot lasers down the same “tube” GREATLY extending their lethal range. I do enjoy the political necessities of how the battles are fought in addition to just describing space and land skirmishes.
  • I'm a huge fan of this "Us against the Universe" genre and this series has exceeded my expectations. Mr Nuttall does tend to lapse into preaching his personal geopolitical views but he has managed to do so without disrupting the momentum of story . I'm really looking forward to a predictable but highly anticipated happy ending to this very entertaining series.
  • Big problems with story development, for example we are been told
about an enormous ( gigantic ) enemy fleet all over the book but in the end in order to
move the story forward the numbers drops to 2000 vs 500 human ships
and many of the 500 ships are more advance.
For me it makes no sense.
If you can put aside this the story is enjoyable and nice to read.
  • I really enjoyed this book. There were threads in the story that made me laugh, such as scifi writers being better at preparing us for space battles. It was fun to read, kept my interest and entertained me. I look forward to the next one.
  • This is Bob Slater, I just buy my books under my Wife's account.
This book was great...you never know, with this Author, if the good will win or evil shall descend upon us! It is this type of writing style that makes you part of the story, never knowing if/when a major character will just cease to be...you just never know!
Loved it, read it in 3 days....
  • Very Good Read.

Without giving anything away, this book is just the start of the war but it doesn't end in a Cliff-Hanger.
  • Up until this book, I’ve really enjoyed the Learning Experience series. Unfortunately, this book beggars belief with the plot twists. Supposedly highly intelligent characters do incredibly stupid things in order to draw out the story. If you’re okay with this, and you’ve enjoyed the other books, then you should be able to make it through this one. Nuttall needs to find someone to critically review his work before it is published to point out the inconsistencies in the story.
