• El Señor Presidente es un estudio de un pueblo que ha perdido su alma. Los inocentes ya no son dueños de su propio destino y actúan con miedo y sin compasión para sobrevivir. El presidente aparece in pocas escenas en el libro, pero controla el complot y las vidas tanto de sus cómplices y de sus enemigos por igual. La narrativa comienza cuando “Una fuerza ciega acababa de quitar la vida al coronel José Parrales Sonriente, alias el hombre de la mulita.” El coronel Parrales cumplía los deseos del presidente y su muerte es el resultado de un encuentro accidental con Pelele, un hombre loco de la calle. Pero todos sufren las consecuencias. Unos por conocerlos, otros for ser parientes de los conocidos. Otros por haber perdido la confianza del presidente. La tragedia de la dictadura es como inocentes son tratados por amigos de ayer y también por familia, cuando descubren que hay algún hilo que los conecte a un “enemigo” del presidente.
  
  El favorito del presidente, Miguel Cara de Ángel (bello y malo como Satán), es el arquitecto de las artimañas que mantienen al presidente en el poder. Sin embargo, ni el puede salvarse. Su conciencia le perjudica y se enamora de Camila, la hija del general Eusebio Canales, alias Chamarrita. El general simple fue leal, pero sospechas abundan y el presidente ataca prematuramente. El general Canales escapa dejando su hija con la espera de que su hermanos cuiden de ella, pero ni le abren la puerta for miedo que cualquier contacto con ella pueda mancharlos. Cara de Ángel se casa con ella y el presidente lo manda al exterior para fomentar el apoyo de Estados Unidos para repostularse como candidato. Cara de Ángel solo llega hasta el puerto donde lo aprenden y lo mandan a la mazmorra para podrirse en la oscuridad y la soledad. El libro nos deja con solo un pequeño rayo de luz, pues el hijo que deja Cara de Ángel “…creció en el campo, fue hombre de campo, y Camila no volvió a poner pies en la ciudad.”

  The President is the study of a people that have lost their soul. The innocents are no longer masters of their own destiny and act out of fear and without compassion in order to survive. The president appears very few scenes in the book, but controls the plot and the lives of both his accomplices and enemies. The narrative begins just “As a blind force takes the life of colonel José Parrales Sonriente, alias small mule.” Colonel Parrales followed the wishes of the president and his death is the accidental encounter with Pelele, a crazy homeless person. But everyone suffers the consequences. Some for knowing them, and others for being related to the acquaintances. Others because they lost favor with the president. The tragedy of the dictatorship is how innocents are treated by their friends from yesterday and also by their own family when they find out that they are connected in the smallest way to an “enemy” of the president.
  
  The favorite of the president, Miguel Cara de Ángel (as beautiful and evil as Satan), is the architect of the connivings that keep the president in power. But not even he can save himself. His conscience betrays him and he falls for Camila, the daughter of general Eusebio Canales, alias little jacket. The general was always faithful, but suspicions abound and the president attacks preemptively. General Canales escapes leaving his daughter behind with the hope that his brothers will take care of her, but they don't even open the door out of fear that any contact with her will taint them. Cara de Ángel marries her and the president sends him away to the United States to support his candidacy for reelection. Cara de Ángel only makes it to the port, where he is aprehended and sent back to rot in the darkness and solitude of a dungeon. The book leaves us with a very small ray of hope, for the son that Cara de Ángel leaves behind ¨…. grows up in the countryside, becomes a country man, and Camila never sets foot in the city again.”
• I must state that I recently read the Edition of the book... Asturias develops a superb plot aimed at scrutinizing the politics of many of the Latin American dictatorships that were rampant in the Twentieth Century. It is interesting that, as was common among these daring authors, his work was published in Paris and not in Guatemala City -- he probably wouldn't have survived in his home country.
  Asturias' use of regionalisms always leads to having to provide a glossary, adding to the learning eaxperience. In addition, I have the impression that he feels free to add a few words of his own creation...
• Definitivamente no es una historia sencilla al empezar el libro, pero con un poco de paciencia se descubre que el escritor ha creado una historia desde una perspectiva un poco diferente y que la dificultad no está necesariamente en la historia sino en el lector que busca o más bien necesita esa estructura clásica para poderse ubicar y sentir cómodo. Eso es lo que más me gustó del libro. No le doy 5 estrellas porque me reservo la 5 para mis libros preferidos, pero es bastante bueno y esta versión de kidle está muy bien.
• Siempre quise leer este libro tan mencionado por libros de texto y profesores en la universidad. Es un libro que se adapta a cualquier época, ciudad o problemas sociales en Latinoamérica.
• I love this book. The story and details are presented in such a way that it grips the reader. I love he way MAA assesses the storyline and characters, truly a literature masterpiece.
